Irati Forest

  • Irati Forest, Navarra Pyrenees

The Irati forest is a natural reserve, since 1986. It’s the biggest wood extension of Europe, and goes through Aezcoa and Salazar Valleys, with the Port de Larrau on the west and Puerto de Ibaneta on the west. Irati has a different beauty, with absolutely virgin areas, refuge of amazing types of fauna and flora.

Hills covered with centenary Hagues pointing to the Irabia dock, surrounded of traditional legends and the Virgen de las Nieves (Snow Virgin) Hermitage are the main attractions. Between Lumbier, Sanguesa and Liedena you will find some interesting Roman villa ruins.

At these points you will enjoy some spectacular views. Walking looking for fresh water sources, close to the Irati River you will see the dominant mass of the Orthy Peak. The fauna of the forest is incredibly rich, with lots of different fish, deer, foxes and wild boars. We recommend you visit Ochagavia and Orbaizeta, villages that are two of the most beautiful in the Navarra Pyrenees.
